This issue is commonly encountered when using ISTA with older BMW chassis such as the E39, E46, E53, E38, E83, and E85.

In most cases, the problem is not related to your ISTA installation or EDIABAS configuration. If INPA can communicate with the vehicle successfully, your software setup is likely working correctly.

The error usually occurs because ISTA requires a proper K-Line communication handshake on older vehicles. Unlike INPA, which can often communicate with a partial K-Line connection, ISTA is much more sensitive to cable configuration and communication quality.

Possible Causes

* The K+DCAN cable switch is set to the wrong position.

* **DCAN mode** (typically the left position) is intended for newer vehicles such as E60, E90, F-Series, and G-Series models.
* **K-Line mode** (typically the right position) is required for older vehicles such as E46, E53, E85, and E83.

* Pins 7 and 8 are not properly bridged.

* Many older BMW models require both K-Line pins to be connected.
* Some K+DCAN cables only provide communication on pin 7 unless the switch is set correctly or pins 7 and 8 are physically bridged.

* The cable is not fully compatible with K-Line communication.

* Certain low-cost K+DCAN cables work correctly with INPA but fail to provide the communication quality required by ISTA.
